So why get rid of our clinics?
The numbers are too large, even at 12! In order for us to effectively communicate our teachings properly, we need smaller groups. We need groups of similar ability. We need groups that are looking to learn, not just looking for an hour of ice.
We always go to a “different” clinic, why should we change?
The next time you go to another clinic, please note the following
things:
So what? What do you do differently?
Everything.
Like what?
Wayne & Kelly are the only instructors. There is no need for additional people to balance out the ratio, we already have it. You are in groups of three. There is no place to hide. Students will be taught the proper technique and then corrected--yes corrected. This is not a demo hour, we already know how to do it. We will know your kids’ names and we take pride in their success. Our name is at stake, we don’t ignore anyone and move on. Their success is our success.
Sounds boring and monotonous, is it?
Boring? No. Monotonous? Yep, and it works. If it takes 10,000 times to master any skill, then it has to have repetition. Likewise, we don’t move on until we are satisfied with the result.
Great, I’m in. How much improvement will I see after the hour?
Here is the reality, minimal improvement (if any) with most kids after an hour. Contrary to what any other clinic may promise, true fundamentals in skating and work with the puck take years to master, not an hour. It is our job to build the foundation on technique and then improve upon it. Although one hour gives a basis in a couple of things, it is the ongoing instruction that makes you a better player. This is not a process that takes overnight.
What ages can benefit from this?
We like the kids to know how to competently skate to truly maximize what we can teach. "Learn to skate" taught by us is not money well spent. But, once they can get around well, we can groom their technique so they can begin to excel. It is much easier when they are young, as we don’t have to break their bad habits. Older ages will be challenged and we will find their deficiencies--they have them. They will be forced to do things with which they are not comfortable. They may be embarrassed at how easy Kelly can make them look. This is good, this is why they should be attending. The drills we do are done at every level of hockey, right through to the NHL.
Your Investment?
We charge $100/hour total for the group, plus the cost of ice time. This gives you both instructors on the ice.
If you prefer just skating or just puck work with the one instructor, the cost is $75/hour for the group, plus the cost of ice time. Ice time can be purchased by yourself, or we can purchase it for you and supply you with a copy of the receipt.
